Day 3 - Movistar Chile Kiteboard World Cup 2008

Another fantastic day concludes at the PKRA 2008 World Tour in Matanzas, Chile dubbed Movistar Kiteboard World Cup 2008. The same weather condition as yesterday prevailed today with cloudy to overcast skies in the morning but bright, sunny weather in the afternoon. The wind was also light during the first half of the day so the games started an hour and a half later than the original schedule of 10:30 a.m. Most of the competitors rigged their 9-meter kites during the start but went on to downgrade to their 7-meters later in the day.


In today’s notable heats, Maciek Kozerski (Naish, POL) was defeated by Michael Schitzhofer (JN, AUS) in a tough heat #27a with more powered moves, higher tricks and faster moves. Tom Court (North, GBR) defeated Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUS) in the same heat with a fairly solid run, landing a regular and switch mobe, back to blind air pass, kiteloop handle pass, slim, shifty 3, and a blind judge with aerial handle pass. Yates on the other hand, landed a slim, 313 5, blind judge with aerial handle pass, back to blind air pass, front mobe and mobe to wrapped.

Alvaro Onieva (Best, ESP) took a decisive win over countryman Cesar Portas (North) in the 28th heat with more power and cleaner execution while Tom Hebert (Airush, New Caledonia) defeated Madison Van Heurck (Naish, USVI) in a super stylish heat, riding smoothly and more powered.

Alex Pastor (Naish, ESP) lived to fight another day and moved a step closer to challenging Mikael Blomvall for the 4th place overall by knocking out Shitzhofer in heat #29 with high technical difficulty score and better execution and Pastor in heat #30b. Russian Petr Tyuskevich then defeated Tom Court in the same heat with more varied tricks and a higher technical difficulty score.


The 30th heat saw Onieva pounced Hebert, riding super-powered moves and clean tricks, going against Hebert’s big moves with grabs. With a much lower kite throughout this moves plus more variation, Onieva took the heat win and moved on the next round only to be defeated by countryman Pastor who is bent on getting the 4th place overall win. With a higher technical riding score, landing a regular and switch slim/back to blind air pass, mobe, front mobe, blind judge, and front mobe to blind, Pastor won the heat. However, his luck ran out in the 32nd heat when he landed hard on the water and hurt his ankle and headed back to the beach. Pastor landed only a blind judge, mobe, non-inverted slim while his opponent, Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA) landed a blind judge, hasselhoff, 313, s-bend to blind, slim and kgb thereby taking the win. Pastor settled for 5th place in the overall PKRA rankings as a result of his loss.

In the 33rd heat, Garat won over Blomvall with a 3-2 decision to inch his way back to 3rd. The French kiteboarder landed a regular and switch slim, blind judge with aerial handle pass, mobe 5, front mobe, back to blind air pass, mobe to wrapped and front mobe while Blomvall landed a blind judge with aerial handle pass, slim, s-bend to blind, kgb and mobe. A higher technical score for Garat coupled with bigger moves gave him the win.

The 34th heat saw a fired up Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) taking down Garat with a regular and switch kgb, blind judge with aerial handle pass, front mobe, s-bend to blind, front mobe to blind, double s-bend to blind, front side 360, 313, mobe, non-inverted slim, mobe 7 and kiteloop handle pass winning via technical riding and bigger moves.


The men’s double saw two final heats between Langeree and single elimination round winner Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, GBR). The first final heat saw Langeree outscoring Hadlow with more variety and higher moves coupled with double pass moves, outweighing Hadlow’s slightly powered moves. The second final round went to Hadlow after a strong heat from both riders. The UK’s pride landed a regular and switch slim/mobe, blind judge with aerial handle pass, front mobe to blind, shifty 3, kiteloop handle pass and mobe 5 while Langeree landed a regular and switch kgb, blind judge with aerial handle pass, s-bend to blind air pass, double s-bend to blind, front mobe 5, front side 360, 313, non-inverted slim, mobe to wrapped and kiteloop handle pass. Hadlow performed with a lot more power and took home the crown.

The ladies division on the other hand, saw the PKRA Tour regulars dominating the podium, with Susi Mai (Cabrinha, GER) defeating Russian Alexandra Maslova (North) in heat #17 with a higher technical riding heat. However, Mai was stopped in the 18th heat by top-ranked Bruna Kajiya (Best, BRA) in the 18th heat with a blind judge and back to blind air pass.


The ever unstoppable Gisela Pulido once again took home the glory in the doubles final, defeating Kajiya with a blind judge, front mobe, slim, 313 and s-bend to blind. Kajiya landed a s-bend to blind, front to blind, blind judge with aerial handle pass and had a few kite troubles after a crash. Pulido won with a higher technical difficulty score.

The freestyle awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday. Congratulations to Aaron Hadlow and Gisela Pulido – the 2008 PKRA World Champions!

We would also like to congratulate all the extreme kiteboarding athletes who have joined in this year’s Tour. They’ve encountered many challenges both in and out of the competition area but emerged victorious one way or the other. Many of them did their best and went all the way to overcome the obstacles. While others may have reaped the fruits of their hardships, there are also those who failed to do better in the rankings but are winners in their own rights. And then, there are those who stay hidden behind the cameras – the men and women who organizes the event and have made this year’s PKRA World Tour one for the record books. Day 2 - Movistar Chile Kiteboard World Cup 2008

The PKRA 2008 World Tour in Matanzas, Chile wraps up a second successful day amidst the gloomy wind and wave forecast for the week ahead. The sky was cloudy to overcast in the morning but turned to a bright, sunny afternoon during the freestyle elimination rounds. Since the wind forecast for the coming days is not looking good, the organizers are keeping up the momentum to finish the games as fast as possible while keeping the excitement level to extreme.


The wind in the morning was mostly light, averaging only 8 knots. The mandatory skippers meeting started at 10:00 am followed by the drawing for the single elimination ladder. Since the wind was still building momentum, race director Eric Troostheide decided to delay the start until conditions were at PKRA standards.


Finally around 11:30 am, the wind was acceptable enough to start the men’s heats but since the wind on the inside was still lighter, most of the competitors headed out on their 8 to 9-meter kites. By the time the second round of the men’s elimination started, most of the riders had switched down to their smaller kites.



The wind stayed strong for the rest of the event, wrapping up another extreme kiteboarding day at 4:00 pm with a small awarding ceremony on the beach for the single elimination winners.

Day 2 Highlights

It was a fast-paced, action-packed second day as the freestyle single eliminations were completed for both the men and the women’s division. Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUS) turned up the heat with an easy win over Manuel Bustos (Morph, ARG) in heat #2b but bowed down to PKRA’s World Number 3 Alvaro Onieva (Best, ESP) in the 9th heat. Cayque Aquino (Naish, BRA) defeated local rider Jose Tomas Valenzuela (North, CHI) in their 8th heat match-up with the Brazilian rider winning over with a higher technical difficulty score and more trick variation.

Sebastien Garat (RRD, France) overtook North’s Tom Court (GBR) in the 9th heat with a blind judge with aerial handle pass, front mobe, kgb, s-bend to blind air pass, regular and switch slim, shifty 360 and a kiteloop handle pass. Court managed to land a blind judge, back to blind air pass, mobe, slim and kiteloop but lost via technical difficulty. Garat then defeated Onieva in the 13th heat with more varied tricks (front mobe, kgb, mobe 5 and shifty 3) plus a regular and switch slim. Onieva landed a blind judge, mobe, front side with air pass and slim.

Tom Hebert is doing absolutely fantastic this year, currently ranking number 6 in the PKRA and has been in all the Tour stops this year. He defeated Austria’s Michael Schitzhofer (JN Kites) in heat #10 with a display of greater technical riding skills, coupled with a greater height advantage and switch variety. He then faced current Tour title challenger Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) in the 13th heat, which spelled bad news for Hebert. Langeree won over Hebert with a much higher technical difficulty rating and landed more varied tricks. The Dutch rider then moved in for a kill in the 15th heat, defeating Garat to advance into the finals.

Despite Alex Pastor (Naish, ESP) crashing heavily and ruining his kite in heat #11b, he already had enough moves landed to take the win over Madison Van Heurck (Naish, USVI). Pastor won with better executed moves and a higher technical riding score.

Heat #14 was a fight for the fourth in the total rankings between Mikael Blomvall (Nobile, SWE) and Pastor. Blomvall took the win with a 3-2 decision, claiming 4th overall for now. With a 3 regular and switch moves to 1, Blomvall landed more technical moves and variety while Pastor went for the bigger moves but butt-checked a lot on his landings, including a mobe 7 and a NIS-5.

An all-fired up Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, GBR) took an easy 15th heat win over Blomvall who had a bad heat, crashing several moves but still managing to land a regular and switch slim, kgb, mobe, shifty 3 and a hasselhoff. The current world champion landed 3 regular and switch moves as well as a front mobe to blind. Blomvall settled for third place overall by defeating Garat for the last podium .

The final heat was, again, between Langeree and Hadlow. Claiming the world championship title, Hadlow landed a regular and switch slim, regular and switch back to blind air pass, blind judge with aerial handle pass, s-bend to blind air pass, non-inverted slim, mobe, shifty 3 and kiteloop handle pass, winning with more switch variety and a lower kite position on top of riding with more power. Langeree went bigger in his moves but had his kite a bit higher and lacked the switch variety, landing a regular and switch back to blind air pass, blind judge with aerial handle pass, front mobe, 313, front side 360, mobe, mobe 7, non-inverted slim, late pass mobe and kiteloop 5. Congratulations to Aaron Hadlow, 5-time PKRA World Champion!

The ladies had their equal share of extreme kiteboarding action. Elena Pitoulis (North, GRE) won her heat by defeating Alexandra Maslova (North, RUS) in heat #6 with a 3-2 decision but lost to Gisela Pulido (Slingshot, ESP) in the 7th heat.

Bruna Kajiya (Best, BRA), winning with air pass moves defeated Susi Mai (Cabrinha, GER) in heat #7a. Kajiya landed a blind judge, s-bend to blind and back to blind air pass winning with a much higher technical rating while Mai landed a raley to blind and a big front roll tail grab.



In the fight for third place overall, Mai emerged victorious with a raley to blind and front to blind over Pitoulis who managed a raley and back to toeside. Mai won via technical difficulty. The final heat also had Gisela waving to the crowd from the top podium position, beating Bruna Kajiya (Best, BRA) with higher technical riding level and cleaner landings. Pulido landed a slim, blind judge, front mobe, and 313 over Kajiya’s blind judge, s-bend to blind, raley to wrapped and a butt-checked back to blind air pass. Congratulations to Gisela Pulido for winning the 2008 PKRA World Championship Title!

Tomorrow will be the start of the doubles with a skippers meeting at 10:00 am with first possible start at 10:30 am.

Day 1 - Movistar Chile Kiteboard World Cup 2008
The PKRA 2008 World Tour is about to close another successful year with the last Tour stop happening in Matanzas, Chile but not without a grand finale. The 10th and last leg of the World Tour is currently being held in the remote but magnificent Playa de Matanzas, a small village on the western coast of Chile. This far-flung community is a famous surfing and kiteboarding spot because of its big waves and strong winds. It will be the home of 24 extreme kiteboard freestylers from 17 different nationalities for 8 challenging days and will be joined in by another 24 wave riders who will be competing for the 2008 PKRA Wave World Championship.
The Freestyle competition dubbed Movistar Kiteboard World Cup 2008 is the culmination of this year’s Tour which will run until the 11th of October. A win here by Kevin Langeree would tie him to current Tour leader Aaron Hadlow for the World Championship crown so this last Tour stop will be an interesting event to follow.

Day 1 Highlights

Today’s events started at 11:00 am. Clear, bright skies dominated the first day while the air was cold at 15° Celsius but felt much colder because of the 17-20 knots side shore wind that blew particularly during the afternoon. The waves ranged from 2 to 3 meters with only the larger set of waves bringing in the 3-meter heights.

Kicking off the competition were the wave riders who ran the entire day’s event. The competition ladder for the wave riding is a dingle format where the first round winners will automatically advance to the third round while the 2nd and 3rd place finishers of the first round would compete in a second round elimination. The winner from the second round will then advance to the third round and compete with the 1st place winners of the first round. From there, the competition went man on man and the winner advanced to the next round while the loser will be out of the game.

In the first round elimination, Fernando Paraud (Best, PER), Sky Solbach (North, USA), Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED), Eduardo Carrad (No Stress, BRA), Jeremy Eloy (North, FRA), Guilly Brandao (Mormaii, BRA), Roberto Nascimiento (Best, BRA), and Etienne Lhote (Fone, FRA) all defeated their respective competitors and advanced to the third round. This same batch of winners also emerged victorious in the third round with the exception of Lhote who lost to Dreu Beavis (North, AUS).



In round number four, Paraud defeated Solbach while Langeree defeated Carrad in the 17th heat runs. Eloy lost to Brandao and Beavis was defeated by Nascimiento in the 18th heats.

Race Director Eric Troostheide decided to have a 10-minute break immediately following the semi-finals before running the finals.

It was a Langeree-Brandao fight in the finals while Paraud met Beavis for the third podium spot. Although the wave competition was completed, the results will not be released until Saturday for the awarding ceremony. The judging criteria’s were basically a point system with the best two waves during a heat which counted to their overall score. The competitor with the best wave selection and ability to ride it would score the highest.

All the heats of the day ran for about 12 minutes with a 2-minute transition time. The final two heats were 15-minute heats to allow the competitors extra time to show the judges and crowd why they were the best.

The day wrapped up at around 6:00 pm with dying winds and waves while tomorrow’s skippers meeting is set for 10:00 am with a first possible start half an hour later. If there is enough wind and waves, there might be another dingle round for the waves before the competition will switch over to the freestyle.

lees even de uitleg op ksnoordwijk punt nl. Kevin kan niet meer wereldkampioen worden....

volgens mij wel, ze kunnen 3 wedstrijden weg strepen!

Kevin heeft hier zelf betoogt dat het nog wel kan. Het verhaal op ksnoordwijk gaat ervan uit dat je bij het tellen van de discard scores naar de eerste score met een verschil moet kijken. Dat staat er echter niet (dat geldt blijkbaar alleen voor de regel daarboven). Er staat letterlijk "If tie remains, then discard scores will be used to break the tie." Blijkbaar worden alle discard scores in één keer geteld, en kan het dus wel.

Volgens de Headjudge kan het ook nog en anders had het allang op Hadlow's site gestaan dat ie weer wereldkampioen was geworden nietwaar?

Kom net van het water af en ben helaas 2de geworden in de singles... We hebben nog de doubles dus er kan nog van alles gebeuren. Maar wat ik nu nog het vetste vind is de wave!! De golf hier is zeker de best golf die ik gekite hebt!! Het blijft maar gaan en gaan. Ik hoop dat er nog een goede swell aan komt zodat we nog effe een paar golfjes door de midden kunnen rammen. keep you updated!!

Had de eer om met de Naish testdag op de Slufter het water te delen met Kevin en Jalou.

Het gemak waarmee Kevin beult en het plezier die hij hieraan beleeft is aanstekkelijk en bewonderingswaardig.
Achter hem aan varen op het water is een waar genot, even een golfje pakken om op 6m boven je bar te hangen en de punt van je board in je hand te hebben om daarna weer zacht te landen, of omdat hij nog genoeg tijd heeft in de lucht er maar een paas bij doet.
De kitecontole die hij heeft is magisch, maakt niet uit hoe maar hij land het, totale controle.
Natuurlijk maakt hij bommetjes, maar dat is dan doordat hij echt speelt, speelt met de kiters om hem heen, lekker gek doen.
Echt vet hoog over je heen springen met een 1080 om dan met een downloop weer achter je te zitten en je uit te dagen, altijd met een brede grijns.

Wat Kevin bijzonder maakt is dat hij voor iedereen open staat, je altijd te woord staat en je helpt waar nodig is.

Dat hij weer 2e wordt dit jaar is geen schande, Aaron is uniek in zijn stijl, vergeet niet dat hij een waslijst van tricks op zijn naam heeft staan, Aaron is een uberbeul.
Het feit dat Kevin hem meerdere malen heeft verslagen zegt genoeg over de inzet van Kevin.

En idd, Kevin is de meest allrounde kiter die ik ken, hij beheerst alle facetten van het kiten.

Trouwens KBO met goede wind is ook niet verkeerd en het NK is over een 2/3 jaar vast en zeker ook een genot om naar te kijken hoor met al die aankomende talenten.

Geen eerste, maar wel weer tweede. Voor jou misschien een teleurstelling, maar toch gewoon echt heel erg knap gedaan. Ik ken iemand uit Leiden die het waarschijnlijk niet zou halen om 2e van de wereld worden.
In de harloperij, racerij en dergelijke gaat het ook steeds om 10e van secondes, waar heb je het dan nog over? De titel en de eer inderdaad, al lang niet het trukje meer. En dat is nou precies waarom het zo moeilijk is. Hij is jouw lat, jouw grens. Had de lat een stuk hoger gelegen, dan had jouw grens een stuk verder gelegen.

Een echte pro beult gewoon door, het is namelijk zijn werk. Dus volgend jaar weer vol er tegenaan.
